Opera 101: “From the Singer’s Perspective”

Friday, February 3rd

Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar

8-10pm

Last month audience members learned about the conductor's role in an opera...this month we will focus on the singer's perspective! They make it look so easy, but what do they actually do to prepare? How do they approach a new role? Join us to find out the answers to these questions all while the wonderful staff at Boheme keep your glasses full!

Each month, Opera Vista will introduce you to a new facet of the world of opera. Presented by our founder and artistic director Viswa Subbaraman, we will be exploring the many shadings and variations that make opera such an intriguing art form.

Thomas Ades’ Powder her Face is considered one of the most controversial operas of the past two decades. Detailing the marriage and subsequent divorce of the Duchess of Argyll, the story begins on the cusp of the duchess’s eviction from the hotel room she’s called home for the past two decades and follows her from a life of grandeur to a life of penniless obscurity. While considered quite a risqué opera, both my and Sandra Bernhard’s interpretation of the piece really tries to show the sadness surrounding the Duchess as people abandon her one by one.

Philip Glass’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” - September 24th @ Bayou Bend!

Order Tickets Here: http://www.mfah.org/calendar/opera-under-stars-bayou-bend/4653/

Opera Vista invites you to the first production of its 2011-2012 5th Anniversary season: Philip Glass's setting of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of the Usher this September 24th at 8 pm at the Bayou Bend Collections and Gardens (6003 Memorial Drive).

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was one of America's greatest writers, and a master of gothic romanticism. "The Fall of the House of Usher" tells the story of William who is invited by his childhood friend, Roderick Usher, to join him at his family's manor. When he arrives at Roderick's gloomy house, he finds himself helplessly drawn into the strange happenings of his psychologically disturbed friend and Madeline, Roderick's beloved, dying sister.

Philip Glass's dark and intensely brooding music perfectly compliments this mysterious tale where the line between reality and delusion is blurred. We hope you can join us for a great evening of music!
